By Samantha Romero,
At 9 A.M. sharp, registration began for the Minnesota United FC InSports Day. The children began to arrive and everyone was eager to have a day full of soccer. With over 90 kids registered and families on the sidelines, the day began with a large group warm up and ball-handling skills lead by former professional soccer player, Craig Mallace. Mallace, a Scotland native has been leading and coaching soccer camps since 2009. He played college soccer with the Milwaukee Panthers and continued his professional careers with the Minnesota Thunder, a USL First Division team. He played with the Thunder until May 2009 where he eventually had to retire due to injury. His passion for soccer did not stop there as he continued leading soccer camps in several states, in 2014 he became the director of camps & youth development for Minnesota United FC. It was a two-hour long camp, which began with large group activities, followed by small group skill building activities, and ended with a soccer scrimmage tournament. There were 8 stations set up that the kids participated in. The stations focused on foot handling, ball juggling, teamwork, and goal keeping. Throughout the camp, the InSports Team looked for kids who stood out with exceptional sportsmanship, coachability, and work ethic, which was the day’s camp challenge. A signed soccer ball and three jerseys were given to these chosen campers at the end of the day! The second InSports Day was a great success. We had families who traveled from all over the metro area to participate. The InSports team was proud to put on such a successful camp to give kids a chance to try out a new sport and improve their skills! More pictures from the day can be found on our Facebook page HERE! It doesn’t get much better than a day of golf on a beautiful summer day- except if that golf tournament is raising money for a charity to inspire kids to get out and play sports- over $19,000 to be exact! The 2nd annual InSports Foundation golf tournament was held on June 20th, 2015 at the Monticello Country Club. This summer’s tournament was a huge success for InSports. With over 100 golfers signed up, it was bound to be an exciting day. For $25 the golfers could buy the InPack, which included two mulligans and a raffle ticket to have a chance to win a variety of prizes! Along with the raffle was our silent auction. The auction included items ranging from wine & food gift baskets, signed football helmets and hockey sticks, to a range of different golf course foursomes. Tee times started at 12 o’clock sharp and everyone was ready to get out and play. We had an array of sponsors at different holes that were able to share their services as well as helping us with ours. Summit Chiropractic practiced free massages for the golfers with a long day of playing ahead of them, and the InSports booth hosted a social media contest where guests could take a photo in our InSports Instagram cutout! After a long day of golfing, guests were invited back to the clubhouse to make their final bids on the silent auction, and accept their awards for men & women’s long drive and longest putt, closest to the pin, and closest to the gin! The InSports team was so proud to put on a successful event! We want to thank all of our sponsors once again for contributing to our goal in getting 10,000 kids in 3 years to get in the game, as well as everyone who participated and volunteered to make this golf tournament a hole in one!
